I would love to find other works by March who does give a nod to the goddess of horror herself, Shirley Jackson whom is another favourite. This is one of those books that should be read and cherished over and over and it really is a fantastic read. March unfortunately died before he saw his book become a hit which was turned into a hit Broadway play and then a very successful classic film. He uses a suggestions and slight nods towards creating your mind to do the work.Īlthough the psychology of 1940's maybe a bit blaise in regards to modern psychology, this does not take away or hinder the story in any way. The normality of their lives helps drive the piece forward and not once does he cheapen the material to give you that modern slant of violence or gore. March excels in the mundane existence of the day to day life and he does find away to make this interesting. As the case becomes clearer through gossip and retellings of the incidents, Christine awakes from her blind existence and starts putting the pieces together like Rhoda during her favourite pastime putting puzzles together. Starting on a typical morning as Christine gets Rhoda ready to go to the annual picnic with her class from the Fern School, things take a turn when Claude Daigel dies in a tragic accident.
Each of the characters are so well written from the main characters down to the smallest of roles creating a fantastic look into this town as Christine comes to grip with the realisation that her daughter may not be the basket of kisses or hugs, she lets on to be. William March's phenomenal last book is told with a profound ease that mesmerizes as it carries you through from chapter to chapter.
